NationBuilder Website Design for Canada’s Rick Peterson

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to design and develop a NationBuilder website theme for Rick Peterson’s campaign for leadership of the Canadian Conservative Party.

Unfortunately, Rick was unsuccessful in his campaign and withdrew yesterday from the nominating contest.

But now that his campaign has ended, I can share my work with you. I had a lot of fun building this one, and I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did.

The Homepage

In the early days of a leadership race, a campaign’s highest digital priority is launching a website quickly and professionally.

For the communications team, however, the number one priority is typically telling the candidate’s story.

With this homepage, we were able to do both. The website is polished and on-brand, and it puts Rick’s central policy proposals and personal story front and center.

The Interior Pages

Beyond the homepage, Rick’s website supported all of NationBuilder’s page types, including sign up forms, donation pages, petitions, and event calendars.

This depth of functionality — all thoroughly tested and on-brand — empowered the campaign’s digital team to quickly create and publish the pages they needed to succeed without editing any code.

Bilingual Website Design

Unlike the United States, Canada’s political culture is fully and deeply bilingual (English & French).

Moreover, Rick is fluent in both English and French. It was important to him that I approach the website’s design in a fully bilingual fashion from Day One.

For that reason, I developed two identical website themes (one for each language) and ensured that every form field, label, and other hard-coded bits of text were fully functional in both English and French.

The campaign then launched two websites concurrently — one in English and the other in French.

Conclusion

The best part of this project was that we went from “go” to “launch” in less than one week.

For leadership campaigns especially, short timelines like these are often unavoidable due to strict campaign finance rules, that sort of quick turnaround time can be a game-changer.

While I regret that his campaign was ultimately unsuccessful, I’m so very thankful that Rick Peterson and his team gave me this opportunity.
